Onthesnow.com discovers the chic Dogwood Cabin in Crested Butte: “Two terms not often found in the same sentence: Fancy and Crested Butte. The isolated Colorado resort is more known for its laid-back appeal and incredibly difficult terrain. Somehow the three-year-old Dogwood Cocktail Cabin successfully mixes the finer things in life with the rustic nature of the central Rockies resort.

“Or, maybe the town’s visitors and residents just need a cocktail that badly after staring down the Banana Funnel all day or navigating narrow, rocky entry points into Third Bowl.

“The Dogwood Cocktail Cabin is a mishmash of honest western appeal you’d expect in quaint Crested Butte and chic boozy flavors normally reserved for cities like San Francisco, Portland and New York.

“Owners Douglas and Phoebe Pedersen bought the cabin intent on turning it into a first-of-its-kind upscale drink destination. Problem was, it was literally falling down (and was known to be quite the party house back in its heyday), meaning they had to spend more than eight months renovating it. This included lifting the house and building a foundation, along with just about every upgrade and fix imaginable. It opened in July 2008.”

Fresh snow in Crested Butte

A wet Pacific storm delivered widespread snow across the entire state of Colorado, with many ski areas reporting more than a foot of snow, including 17 inches at Crested Butte, 16 inches at Telluride and six to 10 inches at the resorts along the I-70 corridor.

Crested Butte’s Snow Betty report this morning: “Hit the fluffy white slopes this morning because we’ve gotten 4 inches of new snow in the last 24 hours! In the last two days, we’ve received 19 inches of snow and this entire weather event in the last week has dropped 37 inches of snow on the mountain. Our “deependable” base is 44″ at the top, 33″ at midway and is waiting for you to practice some powder turns! Our open terrain includes 78 trails on 553 acres, including 75 groomed trails and the Groomer’s Choice for Today, Upper Keystone- one of my favorite runs, by the way! New terrain opening up for the day includes Double Top Glades, Peonia, Silvanite and Topsy. Forecasters are calling for a 60% chance of snow tomorrow, and with our recent snow event, we’re feeling confident the pow will continue to rise.”

Chainless World Championships today

The Chainless World Championships (CWC), take place in Crested Butte today (Friday, June 24) . Though Crested Butte has held a chainless race in years past, this is only the second incarnation as a world championship race.

The race kicks off with a mass LeMans start at 4:00P.M. from the top of Kebler Pass and then heads down 7 miles of dirt and pavement to the heart of town.

For race updates and general shenanigans, be sure to check out the event’s Facebook page.

The CWC is part of the 31st annual Crested Butte Bike Week which started yesterday with Alison Gannett’s Rippin’ Chix Mountain Bike Camps for women and a “Night at the Museum” kick-off party at the Mountain Bike Hall of Fame, 331 Elk Avenue.

Formerly Fat Tire Bike Week, the new name for this popular cycling week is “Michelob Ultra Crested Butte Bike Week”.  The Mountain States Cup Wildflower Rush runs through Sunday, and the Bridges of the Butte 24-Hour Townie Tour starts on Saturday.
